To-day’s Racing News

Galloping .MEETINGS TO COME.

December 26 —Waipukurau J.C. December 26, 28.—Taranaki J.C. December 26, 28, 30. —Westland R.C. December 26, 28.—Dunedin J.C December 26, 27, 28 —Manawatu R.C. December 26, 30, January 1,2. Auckland R.C.

G.J.C. Nominations: Owners and trainers are reminded that nominations for the Greymouth Jockey Club’s meeting on January 1, close this evening, at 9 o’clock.

Might’s Return: Might had a. short spell on returning from his unsuccessful trip- to Australia. He. begins again at Otaki today, on which course, in June, he was third to Walton Park and Lapel.

Not in It; The statement that Royal Banquet s special mission will be the Manawatu Cup. which has appeared in several newspapers, is rather offset by the fact that he was not nominated.

Back to the Flat: Red Sun is to do his holiday racing on „ the flat. After contesting the higliweight on the first day at Awapuni he may come in for the open handicap on the second day. A Come-back:

The Australian natives can make a boomerang come back, and so can the Turf Register. A Boomerang won the Great Autumn Handicap in 1906 and again at Woodville last week. Korero Leased:

It is understood that Korero is to be raced in future under lease by Mr W. Higgins, Wellington. Korero returned from Melbourne recently and joined T. R. George’s stable, which also received Prostration back from A. D. Webster. Intentions Evident: Silver Streak has been freely nominated for events at Auckland. He is in at Dunedin, but the fact that he was not entered for Oamaru points to a trip north. L. J. Ellis has been engaged to ride Silver Streak in the Railway, and there is no sign that he is looking for another mount. Auckland Couplings: In another centre, Cuddle, Argentic, Kiltowyn, and Tybalt, coupled with Silver Streak, Galilee, Star Artist, and Impasto, are the short priced combinations for the big Auckland double.

Sir Nigel/ J. M. Cameron’s gelding Sir Nigel has never looked better than he does at present, being bright and fresh and carrying more condition than at any previc-us period of his racing career. He has the reputation of being something above the average, but his performances do not confirm thjs. He is to be tried over middle distances in the future.

Brood Mare Purchased: Mr. G. M. Currie recently purchased Miss Thespian, the dam of that good hack Chief Ranger. Mr. Currie bred Miss Thespian, who is by Thespian from Sea Elf, one of the Koatanul Stud’s best mares. She produced’ a. fine two-year-old in Mermin, and was the dam of Waterwings, the dam of Honour and Agrion.

A Night Raid Filly: A yearling chestnut filly by Night Raid from Philomena, dam of The Wensum, Francolin, Invoice, Monoxide, and Wakatipu, was bought at the last Trentham sale for 240 guineas by Mr. Edgar Meares, of Perth, and the youngster was named Winbyle. Mr. K. Austin received a cable message this week from Mr. Meares stating that Winbyle won a race easily at Perth on Saturday last and he expected him to have more successes in the near future.

Trentham Stakes: Conditions for the much-discussed Trentham Stakes have been decided by the Wellington Club. The proposed penalty conditions have been omitted, and’the distance has been increased from one mile to one and aquarter miles. Colts and geldings will carry 8.10 and fillies 8.7, which are the Derby weights for January. The stake will be £4OO. The race will be the second item on the final day (January 25 nevt).

Change May Do Good: Golden Hair, who is in the Wairongomai Handicap at Otaki, and whose form for a long time has been terrible, is now in the stable of L. G. Morris, who took her over after the Wanganui spring fixture. According to track reports from Marton, this disappointing mare has done well lately. She is good class at her best, and it will be interesting to see what L. G. Morris can make of her.

Omoto Gallops: Proceedings at Omoto were quiet this morning Most of the horses are being reserved for their winding-up gallops, next week. The star trial today was that In which Metal Bird beat Knocklong over five furlongs in 1.41. They covered the extreme outside of the course and each carried about 9.6, so it was a fine piece of work. After going a round on his own, Wee Mask was joined by Gilford in a dash home ovei’ three furlongs, which took 0.40. Neither horse was ridden out.. Nautipol covered half a mile in 0.53. Copyist, Haulbowline, who has recovered from his recent soreness and Arrow Rose, did pace work. The rain showers have freshened up the course, which will be in fine order for the New Year meeting.

Fifty-year-old Squint: The following appeared in the “New Zealand Herald” of December 5, 1885: “The totalisator has become such an abominable nuisance at ou? race meetings that those who previously attended the course for the sake of witnessing the racing alone are now seeking other amusements on race days. We are giving our young boys a very injudicious and hurtful love of gambling, for which we will suffer when times are harder and they have more in getting their pounds to invest. The ordinary bookmaker, if properly licensed and kept within certain bounds, is quite sufficient to satisfy the general public, and is certainly less objectionable both as a tempter of youth and as a crowd collector, than the 'tote,’ which needs speedy legislation .for its suppression.” Horses for Ellerslie: F. Davis will be taking a team of six to the Auckland summer meeting,

comprising Senior, Karl, Kotou, Plato, Haut Monde and Heritage. Luke Wilson will take Wagner and Corroboree; J. Olsen, Shu and Hest; A. E. Neale. Diatomous; J. H. Jefferd, Kindheart; and W. McKinnon, Werohia. Resides the Cup, Werohia is also in the other main handicaps at the meeting. W. Rayner will be going up with Mr Currie’s team, for which G. Humphries will again be the horseman. R. Reed was .to have ridden Jonathan in the Cup, but the withdrawal of the Thespian horse leaves ’him without a mount. Reed will be on Corroboree. It was also hoped to secure him for Wagner in the Foal Stakes, but he was previously engaged for Kindheart.

Trotting I MEETINGS TO COME.

Dec. 26. —Ashburton T.C. Dec. 26. —Gore T.C. Dec. 26, 28. —Wairarapa T.C. Dec. 26, 27. —Westport T.C. Dec. 27, 28, 31.—Auckland T.C. Dec. 28.—Winton T.C.

Now We Know: The track on which Auburn Lad was credited with pacing a mile against time from a flying start in 1.54 measured up 152 yards short.

Elite Rey: The three-year-old chestnut filly Elite Rey has joined L. Davidson’s stable at Nejv Brighton. Elite Rey is by Wrack from Bon Rey, and was in i»l. B. Edwards’s stable for some time. She competed in the Riccarton Stakes at Addington in -November.

Harold Logan: Harold Logan, who is going to Westport to give an exhibition at the Boxing Day meeting, will attack the mile record if conditions are favourable. He will be accompanied by his stablemates, Llewellyn’s Pet and Glorietta. The former is a clumsy pacer and may not handle the small coast tracks to advantage. Glorietta is a compact, nippy pacer, and she showed a deal of speed to be in front for a mile in the maiden mile and ahalf at New-Brighton.

Brighton Saddle Record? Although Happy Voyage registered 2.4 1-5 against time at. New Brighton, there is no recor dof any horses having bettered 2.10 in a race on this grass track. Marie Celeste went 2.10 3-5 in saddle on Saturday, and Great Thought only a tick worse. Marie Celeste is by Man o’ War, out of Princess Zoe, by Kanuknot (son of Rothschild) -from Hedvic. Princess Zoe is also the dam of Noble Prince, a double winner at Forbury Park who put up a track record of 3.1 for a mile and three furlongs. A sister to Hedvic, a grey mare named Silver Princess, produced Mother Machree, the dam of Blue Mountain, 4.17 for two miles.

Gallant Knight: Gallant Knight cost Mr. J. R. McKenzie a large figure, as one of his breeding is seldom allowed to leave the States. By a two-minute trotter, in Mr. McElwyn, 1.59 i, he is out of Etaday, an own sister to a twominutes pacer in Star Etawah, 1.595. It is a superb pedigree in every line right through to the eighth dam, who was none other than Jessie Pepper, the third dam, among many other notables, .of Mabel Trask, 2.1 H, who is still regarded by some American writers as the greatest of race mares, and is described as “the most beautiful mare ever foaled.”

Minor Epsom Races: Baron Alfqnso, who went 13 2-5 seconds under his handicap time to run third in the 3.5 race on the second day of the last Epsom meeting, and who is reported to have made steady improvement in the interim, may be sorted out by punters among the field of unwieldy size that is to contest the December Handicap. He is one of F. J. Smith’s charges. One of the best races at the meeting should be provided in the Christmas Handicap, in which Valdor, Derby Fame and Cherrill will be given further opportunity to add to their winning records of this season. The grey, Silver Watch, is a back-marker in the Akarana Handicap, but he is highly regarded in the Auckland province although he has won only once this term. Among the acceptors for the Grandstand Handicap will be noticed Bingen Palm, who on the third day at Addington’s Metropolitan Meeting, won handily.

Auckland Cup: Acceptances for the Auckland T C.’s first day, on December 27, are quite good. Roi I’Or and Graham Direct are to race there, en route to Perth, but the former pacer does not appear on the first day’s list. However, Graham Direct remains in the Cup. He is said to have thickened out and to be carrying more condition than when he won the Jubilee Handicap at Oamaru on Labour Day. At Addington on Thursday, this fellow had a good workout over two miles, being kept wide out ,to record 4 30 2-5, the first mile in 2.16 1-5, and the second in 2.14 1-5, while the last half mile took 1.4 3-5. A contempow ary states that this performance left the impression that he will strip in perfect order for his Christmas-time engagements. On the front of the 4.29 Cup, he is well-placed, but the position of Rey Spec, on 12 yards, is also worthy of mention. Rey Spec, who is also an acceptor for the St. Helier’s Handicap at Epsom, won the Lyttelton Handicap at Addington easily, from a 4.30 mark, recording 4.25 under not very favourable conditions. In either race, Rey Spec will be a danger.

Trotters at Epsom: At the last Epsom meeting, Waskasu beat Elissa, both off scratch, in the. Waitemata Handicap, for trotters, the winner going 3.37 from 3.49. In Waskasu’s absence, Elissa won the Greenlane Handicap, on the second day, recording 3.39 2-5. Both are now back on 48 yards in the Selby Handicap, and Autumn Lou, who finished close behind them on the first day of the October meeting, meets them 48 yards better. Autumn Lou gained two thirds subsequently at Thames and this‘aged but consistent trotter appears to be in a good position to score another win, which is very considerably overdue. The Rose Memorial Handicap will see the reappearance, under -F. J. Smiths charge, of Kuini. On the same line as this mare is Audo Patch, whose last effort, for a win, was at the A.T.C. October meeting, registering 4.40 2-5, from a 4.56 mark. A repetition of the form will make Audo Patch hard to beat. Captain Bolt, who won a double at Claudelands in October, was later beaten on his tighter marks at Epsom, but he is a solid trotter, who is still on the im-

prove and his temporary eclipse did not perturb his friends. Young Rodney, who has won three races this season, including a double at Thames, will be put on his mettle in having to concede a start to Kuini and Ando Patch, but many will be prepared to see him come out on top.
