JAP. ARMY SENSATION

WAR OFFICE CHIEF KILLED

BY MEMBER OF STAFF [BY CABLE —PBESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] (Recd. August 13, 10 a.m.) TOKIO, August 12. Major-General Nagata, Director of Military Affairs, died as the result of an attack by a Lieutenant-Colonel of his staff, who after a heated 1 argument, drew his sword and cut down Nagata. It is believed that a dispute arose over Nagata’s report on Hayashi’s policy, with regard to the extreme Nationalist feeling in certain sections of the Army.

LATER. Nagata was assassinated in a room at the War Office.

Colonel Limi was seriously wounded in attempting to protect his chief. The assailant was arrested, but his name is not revealed.

ARMY LOYALTY TEST. (Recd. ’August 13,’ 1 p.m.‘) LONDON, August 12. “The Times’s” Tokio correspondent says: The’public connects the sabring of Nagata with the recent wholesale changes in the army personnel, for the details of which he was officially responsible. Attacks against politicians and officials are no novelty, but this is the first occasion an officer has been attacked. This breach of discipline in the army, priding itself on loyalty, makes the most painful impression, and is regarded as proving the necessity for Hayashi’s drastic changes.
