LAKE BRUNNER NOTES

[OUB OWN CORBESPONDENT.J . Though the higher ranges in the vicinity of the lake have not. yet discarded their Winter mantle Qf snow, the' mild temperature of the past week indicates that Spring is again here, paddocks in the neighbourhood now assuming a hue of green, while the efforts of .keen-kitchen gardeners give promise of early reward for their labours. ■ . .' ’ The timber industry .appears to be in a more flourishing. condition than has been the case for some tinje past. The local mills are working to their full capacity, which: in some cases has lately been increased.. The United Sawmill Cq.’s mills at To Kinga ai'O now working on a largely increased output, and the indications - are that this will- continue for a lengthy period. This company, has lately completed, for the; employees, several new and up-to-date homes, some being the latest in bungalows. Prexiaratiqns are being made for the erection of further buildings as required, and the older homes are being renovated. In this respect, considerable- wisdom has been displayed by the management, as comfortable homes create contented and willing workers. There are other firms who could profit by following the example of United Sawmills Co. The Lake Brunner Sawmill Co. has lately made extensive additions to their mills - and have thereby considerably increased their output' Further extensions are contemplated in the near future, when the latest method of drying timber for dressing by a. nieclianical device will be introduced.

The first section of road which will • connect the township of Moana with ; the local domain has Deen completed by the contractor” Mr. T.' ‘’"K|cGee. ■ Another section of a few chain's will complete the work. The Moana Domain Board has commenced the' work of clearing the land preparatory to creating an area suitable for a sports or camping ground. The ’ Lake Brunner Draipa Club held a concert and dance in Moana Hall on Saturday evening, last," and as usual, with the functions provided by this club, a successful ’ and enjoyable time was spent. The object on this occasion was to provide’ funds 'for local school purposes'.” A crowded house greeted the performers; Who were representative of each centre from Ixotuku to Te Kinga and many .excellent numbers wdre rendered. There'were'numerous recalls, and the acting by members of the club was thoroughly enjoyed. A meed of praise is due to all those ladies, and gentlemen who for some time past have been giving much time and labour in various parts' of the district wherever a. worthy object was at I stake, and the large attendance on Saturday night is ample evidence that their 'efforts are appreciated. An unusual number of accidents have lately occurred in the district, again demonstrating the hazardous nature of the timber industry. One company has been particularly unfortunate, it being quite a while since their accident list has been clear. 'l'here has also been a fair ainpunt cf sickness here in recent weeks, both old and young having suffered from the prevailing epidemic of a mild form of infiuenzm. Many adults have been laid aside for more or less brief periods, and the school attendance has been affected. Dr llaker-McLagun and Nurse Cox. ot the Kducaltion Department, paid their periodical visit of medical inspection to the schools in this distinct last week. During; their vfsit to these, parts the doctor and nurse rendered valuable assistance when thej visited a home where they had learn-■ ed there was a sick child. Their ;i<-. lion was much appreciated by the
