BRITAIN’S NEW RIFLE IRY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.) LONDON. August 10. The “Dispatch” says: After tests of five British and two foreign rifles, the War Office lias adopted a new service rifle which is of British design. It is gas-operated, and is self-loading. The rifle fires fifty aimed shots per minute. It is virtually a light machine g The issue of the new rifle to British forces will cost- three millions, necessitating a supplementary estimate. FRENCH FLEET LONDON. August 10. The “Daily Telegraph's” Naval Correspondent says: That I’rance takes a serious view of the German naval "comeback” is indicated by there being stcadv reinforcements of France s Northern’or Channel Squadron, the strength of which has been doubled during the last nine months. The ships of the Squadron are to be supported by a great air fleet, operating between Brest and the Channel ports.
