BARRYTOWN NOTES
[OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT,] . The weather remains cloudy and overcast, interspersed with light showers. Temperatures are, however, much warmer, and atmospheric conditions are typically those of spring. Gardens are assuming a brighter aspect with the appearance of the spring bulbs showing their rich yellow blooms, so much appreciated after the barren season, during which time the greens alone stand for brightness in gardens. Young iambs are; to be seen in numbers gambolling about the paddocks. Farmers are busy at present feeding their herds each day with ensilage, hay or whatever type of winter fodder they have stored for the purpose.
The monthly meeting of the BarrytownrPunakaiki Women’s Institute yyas held at . Mrs F. E. Roud’s residence. Mrs T. F. Richards presided over a good attendance. The naildriving competition was won by Mrs A. R. Sheldon. An interesting demonstration of tree-pruning was given by Mr F. E. Roud. The competition for next month was set down as the best article from four skeins of wool. During the social hour, afternoon tea was served by the joint hostesses, Mrs F. E. Roud and. Mrs A. R. Sheldon. A pleasant social function arranged by the members of the Women’s Institute on the occasion of the fourth birthday of the Institute was held last Saturday in the Settlers’ Hall. Cards and dancing comprised the entertainment. Mrs W. Kennedy supplied the - music, and Mr A. Richards was M.C. Amoqg those present were Mesdames « Aiken, Roud, Russell; Reynolds, Johnston, Mosley, Kennedy, Rowe, McLagan, Wafer, Ryall, Henry, Mitchell, Weaver; Misses M. Clay, J. Robertson, J. Ryall, M. Lewis, N. E. Austin (Dunedin), M. Wafer, T. Wafer, P. Ryall, V. Downes, M. Howell, J. Dunn. Messrs Weaver, Ryall (3), Kennedy, McTaggart,Dunn (2), Tiplady (Westport), Brown (Westport), A. Richards, Lee, Bullimore, Wafer (3), Erickson, Kennedy (Runanga), Craddock (Westport), O’Brien, Johnston, Aiken, Roud, Reynolds, T. Richards, Glen, Noble, J. Brown (Westport). The co-operative contractors are making good progress in connection with the deviation of the road at the Nine Mile.
Miss Eileen Austin (Dupedin), who has ben spending her holidays with Mr and Mrs P. Wafer, has left on return.
Messrs T. and J. Ryall paid a brief visit to Christchurch last week-end. Mrs E. Rodgers (Wellington) has been spending a short holiday in the district as the guest of Mr and Mrs R. J. Johnston.
Mr G. R. Wylde, 14’110 is an inmate of the Grey River Hospital, Is making a speedy recovery and expects to return home soon.
