BARRYTOWN APPLICATIONS
Further evidence was .called by Mr F. A. Kitchingham, on behalf of the Boiirke Brothers, in the Warden s Vourt, Greymouth,i to-day,, when the proceedings were resumed in the Bafrytowri case. The applications are as ; follow;— w .. James Leonard Bourke, John William . Brosnan appeared for Dehriehy and Golden Sands, Ltd.
George Ernest Poole, mining .engine,ei;,. stated that he hfid had experience of mining by gravel pumps in Australia arid Malaya. He expressed the opinion that ground of the type of that held by the Bourkes could be worked satisfactorily by a gravel pump, as .proposed, and. he gave details qf the, From his previous experience in the Barrytown locality,) .witness was convinced that the whole of the 26 acres held by the Bourkes were gold-bearing, and worth working. After mining,, the ground cojl.d be restored to good grazing condition;
Sinclair TJrotttfr,. engineer, Grey Power Board, stated that the Board had decided over a year ago, to extend its transmission dine to, the Barrytown district, and the work was to be put in hand within a week or so. He gave information regarding mining, pumps, .and' engines. Robert Simpson, gold miner, stated tha| he and his mate bought a gravel pump, and worked on the Nine-Mile Beach, until a few weeks ago, when they shifted it to a point 10 or 15 cha f insi„from Bourko’s property. The pump .was driven by a benzine engine, but the engine was under-powered, and breakdowns made it expensive to run. The gravel pump gave every satisfaction. The gropnd they were working was worse for a gravel pump than Bourke's property should be, because there were more stones in it. This concluded the evidence, and the Warden (Mi* H. Morgan) again adjourned the proceedings, until Tuesday next, when legal argument will be heard.
