Accounts of the extraordinary longevity of Maoris must be accepted with reserve, declared Bishop Williams of Waiapu, in his lectuie to the Philosophical Society at Wellington. Until comparatively recently, said his Lordship, the Maori reckoned his age, not by years, but by events; and the inquiring pakeha might easily be misled. For example, the late Colonel Porter computed the age of Major Ropata Wahawaha to be over 90, as the major had told him that he was a full grown boy at the introduction of the Gospel. The colonel knew that Marsden came in 1814; but what Wahawaha had referred to was the return of Taumatakura to Waiapu in 1834, which Ngatiporou always regarded as the coming of the faith. From other data the Bishop estimated the major’s age as 80 at his death.
