.. TRADE WITH N.Z. r SYDNEY, March 21. Dr. Earle Page to-day announced an early resumption of the trade negotiations between Australia and New Zealand. The Minister of Customs, Mr White is expected to visit the Dominion for that purpose in May.
DEATH SENTENCE. SYDNEY, March 21.
At the criminal Court at Sydney, Janies Lucas, aged 46, was sentenced to edath for maliciously wounding Constable Arthurson, with intent to murder at Bargo, near Goulburn, on January 6. Arthurson, who has now almost recovered from a bulelt wound, disturbed two men robbing a shop. He challenged them to put. up their hands, upon which he was shot, allegedly by Lucas, who was later arrested.
TRUST INVESTMENT.
SYDNEY, March 21.
The Premier, Mr. Stevens, announced in the Legislative Assembly to-day his intention to introduce a Mortgage Trust Investment Companies’ Bill, affecting certain companies whose activities recently were investigated by the Royal Commission here. The Premier stated that the Government was acting in conjunction with, the New Zealand Government, which, he understood, had introduced a similar measure simultaneously in the Dominion.

The Portland Maru is now so far submerged that only the superstructure is showing above the water. The crew have left the vessel.
VICTORIAN POLITICS MELBOURNE, March 22. It is almost certain that the Country Party will launch a no-confidence motion when the State Parliament reassembles on Tuesday.
FEDERAL POLICE
MELBOURNE, March 22
The Federal Government has decided to establish a corps of Federal police officers in Victoria for the protection of Commonwealth property and enforcement of Federal legislation. Similar forces will probably be established in New South Wales and possibly in other States.
