[PEIi PEESS ASSOCIATION.] BILKER IMPRISONED. WELLINGTON, December 26. Alfred Arthur Gurney, who had over twenty previous convictions for dishonesty, was sent to gaol for a month, for imposing on a taxi driver, getting a ride to Plimmerton and back, on the representation he was staying at an hotel in Wellington, from which he rang for a car. On finding the man was not going to pay, the driver proceeded to the Police Station, and handed the fare over for investigation, when a whole tissue of lies was revealed, but no evidence of money. SUSPECT IMPRISONED. WELLINGTON, December 24. Having watched a man loitering about Te Aro Baths, and having satisfied himself the man was intent upon thieving from the dressing boxes, Constable Webby, during hours off duty, arrested William George Hart on the unusual charge of being a rogue and a vagabond in that, being a suspected person, he did frequent Te Aro Baths with felonious intent. The Magistrate, Mr Stillwell, considered the case clearly proved, and imposed a sentence of a month’s imprisonment. SURVEYORS’ PLIGHT. INVERCARGILL, December 24. Two Government surveyors, Eric Perry and Hugh Champion, of Wellington, were rescued in a weak condition after having been lost in the bush west of Manapouri for several days. They set out from Dusky Sound three weeks ago to survey the country to the north arm. Perry was attempting to take a rope across a swollen stream, when he slipped and was carried down two hundred yards, losing all the instruments and maps. The men became lost and for a week subsisted on raw deer meat and ferns. Perry set out for help and luckily met a party of deer stalkers, who rescued Champion in a very exhausted state.
