DISTRICT MATCHES. WICKETS- FAVOUR BOWLERS. The competitions conducted by the West Coast Cricket Association were continued during the week-end, under favourable weather conditions. The wickets showed signs of wear, as a, result of the dry weather, and played up to the bowlers with the result that the latter secured good averages. Batsmen generally were -not energetic, and were slow to protect their wickets. The results of yesterday’s matches made no important alteration in championships points between the teams. COBDEN A—MARIST B. DRAW. Cobden A and Marist B played a drawn match on the Cobden Domain, Marist having 4 wickets in hand -when stumps were drawn. Cornish won the toss for Marist and' sent Cobden to the wickets, for them to compile 175 in good time. W. Barlow top-scored again, with 37. Cornish secured 6 for 52 for Marist. Marist played slow cricket, and at stumps had lost 6 wickets for 115 (E. Casey not out 59). Guy bowled Successfully to take 4 for 39. BOWLERS ON TOP AT REC. » Expectations of an easy win by Marist A. over Cobden 8., at the Recreation Ground yesterday, were not fulfilled, although Marist, by scoring 65 runs, in 20 minutes in their second innings, secured a three point win. It was a game of missed opportunities by Cobden. The wicket was lively, and the bowlers worked it to advantage. The batting was weak players in both teams being hesitant with their strokes, and falling victims from weak shots. The fielding was of poor standard, in most instances, due to the warm weather. Both teams felt the need of change bowlers. Cobden B were unfortunate in losing the services of Coom, who ricked a muscle in his left, leg, when bowling particularly well during Marist’s first innings. WELLINGTON v. AUCKLAND WELLINGTON, December 23. As was inevitable, the special twodays cricket match, Auckland v. Wellington, concluded at the Basin Reserve yesterday in a draw. A feature of the play was the weakness of the batting, though the wicket was firm, and the outfield exceptionally fast. Credit for keeping the batsmen so restrained must be given to the fast and medium fowlers, who kept a good length throughout. Blundell bowled brilliantly, capturing four for 28 and one for 23, and was well supported by Tricklebank and Symes, while Cowie, the Auckland right-hander, did exceptionally well with his fast deliveries, which accounted for three wickets for 63, and two for 21. Townsend also bowled well, his tally being four for 88 and two for 16. The best batting of the match was shown by Vivian and Weir, who made a heroic effort to save the day when things were going very badly for Auckland. They carried the total from 59 to 167, putting on 108 for the fifth wicket, the Auckland captain failing by only five runs to reach the century. Scores: — AUCKLAND—Ist Innings.
