1 WELLINGTON V. AUCKLAND. [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, December 21. Considering that conditions were ideal for run-getting, the batting in the two-days’ match between Auckland and Wellington, which opened at the Basin Reserve this afternoon, was uninspiring. Play started at 1 p.m., and during the . afternoon twelve wickets fell for 288 runs. The attendance of the public was poor. E. D. Blundell, who was leading the Wellington team for the first time, heat H. G. Vivian for the spin of the coin and Wellington eleven had .first strike on a firm wicket and a fast onfield. R. G. Bush and D. R. Garrard stood out of the northern team. The Wellington innings opened inauspiciously, as with 6 runs up, Hepburn touched a rising ball from Cowie, and was well taken by the Auckland wicket-keeper, Edmonds, who was standing well back to the fast bowler. At the tea adjournment, at 3.45, the score stood at 164 for two wickets, Ward being 77 and Tindill 43. The break proved disastrous to the Wellington team, as upon resuming, wickets commenced to fall rapidly, and from two for IGS, the board soon showed six for 180. The innings closed at 5.25 for a total of 283. The Auckland bowling was steady throughout. With thirteen minutes to bat, Auckland met with disaster, Blundell, Wellington captain, securing two wickets for 4 runs. With the last ball of his second over, he cleanbowled Mills with a beautiful inswinger, and with the third ball of his third over, he trapped Matheson l.b.w. Scores: —
