REWANUI NOTES
[OTJB OWJf CORBESPONDENT.] Rewanui was en fete yesterday, when a Garden Party was held in the school under the auspices of the Ground Improvement Committee. The opportunity of “breaking” the school up was also taken .advantage of, when a number of senior children, under the baton of Mr R. F. Wilks, Headmaster, rendered several items <|)f music, which were greatly appreciated by the large gathering of residents, and visitors. An apology for absence was received from Mr P. C. Webb, M.P. Mr Wilks stated that special thanks were due to Mr H. Bignell, of Greymouth, ■whose generosity had made it possible to pioceed immediately with the work of tar-sealing the playground; to Dr Meade, Runanga, who that morning had made a welcome donation; to Mrs It. Lewis, Rewanui, for her gifts and other services rendered.
The Secretary of the School Committee (Mr R. Pearson) said that he could not allow ths occasion to pass without making special reference to the excellent work which had been done by Mr Wilks. Under his guidance the children had distinguished themselves in many directions, chief of which had been singing, and on more than one occasion thej' had given splendid programmes over the air from 3ZR Greymouth. The many, and various improvements, stated Mr Pearson, which had been made to the school grounds since the advent of Mr Wilks, were ’worthy of the highest praise. He called for the thanks of those present, which were given with the usual acclamation. Competitions conducted in the course of the afternoon were won by the following: Cushion (Miss Jessie Menzies), Work of Art (Mrs G. I-litchins), Hopping the Chair (Mr Sam O’Brian), Skipping (tie) Dorothy Uren ami Flora Monk (1127), Marathon Race. James Simmers 1, Gordon Moore 2, John Menzies 3. In a competition for guessing the extra contents of a cake (given by Mrs L.ewis) no one was successful and the article was auctioned. Side stalls were run by the following: Darts, Mr R. Pearson; Ice Cream, Miss Joan Moore and Mr G. Hitchins; Soft Drinks, Miss Jean Hughes; 'Lollies, Miss eC Quate; Handwork Table, Messrs Wilks and Robson. The tea rooms were in charge of Mrs R. K. Monk, who was ably assisted by Mesdames Pearson, Hughes and Moore. Thanks are due to Mrs J. Smith (Dui/ollie) for her assistance in the free tea cup reading; the Grey Harbour Board; the State Mines Department, and to all who so willingly donated gifts which enabled the afternoon to be so successful. In the junior scholars’ events, races were won as follow: —Girls’ race, Peggy Menzies 1, Ruth Summers 2, Barbara Harby 3. Boys’ race, Peter Moore 1, Alex Quate 2, G. Ilitchins 3.
