HOKITIKA NOTES
[OUR own COBBESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, December 21. Although it has been known for some time that the Australian company prospecting the country in the vicinity of: Kanieri have decided to take over the property from the vendors and construct a dredge, publicity is now given to the project. Work has been going on for about twelve months, and although the results have not proved an Eldorado, they were sufficiently encouraging to decide to work the ground. Mining generally shows no tendency to decline. At the Warden’s Court to-day over 100 applications for mining rights are to be heard.
A close inspection of water taps and all water connections throughout the Borough is being made. The Inspector finds many leakages due either to neglect or deliberate, around the town, with the result that control is to be . tightened up somewhat. There need be no fear, however, of tho town supply failing, as effective measures are to be employed if the lake falls much more.
