HOKITIKA NOTES

[our own correspondent.] HOKITIKA, December 19. The break-up for the midsummer vacation took place at the State Schools yesterday. At the main school parents and others were present. Addresses were given by Mr A. C. Armstrong (chairman of the School Committee), who also presented the various awards; Mr Conning (secretary), and Mr J. L. Menzies (headmaster). The children were congratulated on their year’s work, and wishes expressed for a happy holiday. The dux of the Primary Department was Alison Perry, and the dux of the Secondary Department, Violet Ross. The ceremony concluded with the singing of the National Anthem. Mr W. H. Nicol provided ice'-creams for the' children. Mr and Mrs J. Irwin and family left to-day for Invercargill, to which centre Mr Irwin has been transferred.

The improvement in the timber industry has had a marked effect on the waterfront. The three vessels trading to the port (Gael, Te Aroha and Foxton) are working regularly. The tar (or bitumen) for sealing the main highway is coming to hand per medium of the shipping, and, to the Hokitikaites, there is accumulated a huge quantity of this material at the wharf. When completed, the sealing will prove a boon, not only to motorists, but people dwelling alongside the highway.
