NELSON EDUCATION BOARD. At the monthly meeting of the Nelson Education Board on Monday, it was decided to ask the Department for details of the teachers’ rationing scheme for next year, in order that teachers could be informed before the end of the year. . Proficiency results: It was decided not to publish in the papers the names ot the children who had obtained their proficiency certificates, as in the opinion of the Board it had a hurtful effect on those children who were not successful. The Board also decided that teachers be circulated that special tuition out of school hours in the school would not be permitted, also that any children of 14 years, irrespective of the class they are in, expressing a wish before the end of'the first term, must be permitted to sit for their proficiency. The Senior Inspector stated that at the late proficiency examinations, 662 were presented for examination, 547 passed, being 82 per cent, 86 obtined competency, being 13 per cent. In private schools, 78 were presented, 64 passed, being 82. G per cent., 86 obtained competency, being 13 per cent. In schools, 43 presented, 32 passed, 74.4 per cent., 9 gained competency, 20.9 per cent. The report of the Agricultural Instructor was received showing the work done during the past year, which was most satisfactory. The Board, on the motion of Mr Scant.lcku.ry, decided to congratulate Dr. John Nicol, first assistant at the Westport Technical School, on his being made a Doctor of Literature,

fi’he school terms and vacations for 1935 were considered and adopted as follow: First term, Monday. 4th February to Friday, 14th May (14 weeks); second term, Monday, 27tli May to Friday, 23rd August (.13 weeks); third term, Tuesday, 10th September to Wednesday, 18th December (14 weeks 2 days). The regulations require the schools to be open for 400 half days each year and provision has been made under the dates mentioned for 402 half days.
