Prosser, the owner of Great Star, entered a protest against the winner, Silver Sight, on the grounds of interference by crossing in the straight. After the judicial committee had made a full enquiry into the circumstances it was decided that any interference that did take place was not intentional, and did not affect the result of the race. It was decided to dismiss the protest and to refund the protest fee of £2 to Mr. Prosser.

TRENTHAM RACES. SIDELIGHTS ON MEETING. [special to “stab.”] CHRISTCHURCH, December 17. The two-year-old Grey Honour accompanied Manetho to Trentham, but was not produced owing to sustaining slight injuries by failing on the wharf at Lyttelton while being loaded. He was given a little work on arrival at Trentham on Friday, but showed signs of soreness, and his owner, who was present, decided on Saturday morning not to take any risk by racing him. The trouble is expected to work off in a few days, and Grey Honbtor will make the trip to Dunedin. Illuminate, owned by Mr A. Lile, of New Plymouth, met with a severe flesh wound below a shoulder by being kicked by 'another horse when parading at the post for the Duke of Gloucester Handicap, but went off with the field, and raced well until he weakened at the turn into the straight. When pulled up it was found he had lost a considerable quantity of blood, and a veterinary surgeon had to be immediately summoned to stop the flow. Illuminate had bright prospects of winning the hurdle 'races at the Auckland summer meeting, but will not now make the trip.

Another mishap on the course befel the Hastings trainer, W. D. Young, who when attending to his horse, Slippery, before his engagement in the Bledisloe Stakes, sustained a severe kick from the gelding on the face, necessitating medical treatment.

The success’ of Synagogue' over Sporting Blood at Trentham on Saturday was' pleasing to those followers of racing who considered that he would prove the better of the pair with a little more racing. The race was over a mile only, and many may consider the result will be different in the Great Northern Derby, but it has to be considered that Synagogue had no difficulty in beating his rival on Saturday,' and in the Derby a,t Riccarton, he was’ only beaten by a neck by Sporting Blood after having a much more unfavourable passage than the winner. All form to date, therefore, points to Synagogue placing the Auckland classic to his credit. A few .days back, Mr W. S. Clark, of Inangah.ua, owner of Synagogue, received a firm offer of 2000 guineas by a Wellington commissioner on behalf of an Australian client, but the reply stated that no less than 2500 guineas would be accepted, and no further inquiries were made. With three wins in four starts to his credit, the two-year-old Haut Monde has commenced his racing career auspiciously, and he bids fair to build up a highly creditable recqrd on the turf. He is a -member of a well-known family, being by Lord Quex from D’Oro, a sister to Desert Gold, and dam of useful performers in Moorland, Orofino, Doree, Gold Sand, Palace, Dorado and Coronilla. Haut Monde is engaged in the Great Northern Foal Stakes at Ellerslie on Boxing Day, and is certain to be in keen demand. His breeder-owner, Mr T. H. Lowry, previously won the race in 1912 with Sotanp, in 1914 with Desert Gold, and in 1926 with Gascony. It has yet to be proved whether Haut Monde will turn out as brilliant as the outstanding trio named, but he is a very capable youngster, and one likely to well uphold the family name. At the New Zealand Cup meeting, Semper Paratus, won over ten furlongs with 10.6 in 1.55 3-5, and finished full of running. On the final day of the meeting, he carried 11.2, and finished on strongly from a long way back to be narrowly defeated by Sky Rover to whom he conceded 301 b. On this form, with no less than 581 b less to carry in the Duke of Gloucester Handicap than in tiis second engagement at Riccarton, he had to be given favourable prospects in Saturday’s event, and some went so far as to say that he was liable to go to the front at the outset and stay there. Unlike his brother, Cricket Bait, however, Semper Paratus has not the same willing temperament, and he was always in one of the rear positions.

Auckland Cup Tidal: Caliente is a five-year-old mare by Polazel from Fortune’s Wheel, who is an own sister to Phar Lap, and was the first production of Entreaty. She was put into work by Mr A. F. Roberts as a two-year-old, and • was raced three times, but met with an injury, and it was decided to retire her to the stud. She was mated with Polazel, and the production, a chestnut filly now known as Caliente, was sold as a two-year-old at the Kaituna dispersal sale in March, 1932, to her present owner, Mi* J. L. Webb, of Auckland, for 55 guineas. The filly was given her early education by C. Emerson, and later sent to Auckland to be trained. Fortune’s Wheel appeared to have become sound again after rearing Caliente, and Mr Roberts decided to give her another trial as a racehorse, and she was trained for twelve months by Mrs J. Campbell. Fortune’s Wheel was started seven times, and although she at times gave encouraging displays on the tracks, the best she could do in public was a third placing. Her permanent retirement was then agreed upon, and she became the property of Mr G. Kain, of • Orari, who has a foal from her this

season by Lord Warden. Fortune’s Wheel attracted attention by her good looks, and it would be difficult to find a fault with Caliente, whose performance on Saturday was of the brilliant order, as she had to come from near the tail of the big field to participate in the finish. She' finished on stronger than any other contestant in the race, and on that display alone she will have to be seriously regarded as an Auckland Cup proposition. WAIPUKURAU ACCEPTANCES.
