MEETINGS

NELSON EDUCATION BOARD. NELSON, December 18. - The monthly meeting of the Nelson Education Board was held to-day, members present being: Hon. W. H. Mclntyre (chairman), and Messrs Baigent, Carling, Wilkins, Knapp and Scantlebury. Leave of absence was granted Messrs. Harkness and Wood. ” The Chairman, reported that plans and specifications for teachers’ residences at Birchfield and Waimangaroa had been forwarded to the Department. The Chairman proposed personaly to interview, the Minister early in the New Year regarding these matters. Two tenders were received for the construction of an additional lavatory at Westport. The Board considered the lowest tender of £24 was too high and decided to take no action. , On the recommendation of the Chairman, the Board decided to defer until the February meeting the question of caking further action, urging the re-admission of five year olds to primary schools. Mr Mclntyre said it was inadvisable to press this matter at this juncture, as a new Minister had just taken over the portfolio of Education. The Boards knew Mr Smith’s views on the subject, as Chairman of an Education Board, but as a Minister he was in a different position, being governed by the Government policy. Messrs Morgan and Scully, on behalf of Mrs J. Harker, Westport, claimed from the Board for a window, allegedly damaged by a school pupil by a stone from the Westport schoolground. The Board denied any liability. The following teacher appointments were made: —

Sole teacher, Inangahuh Junction, 11 applicants: Dudley Wade transferred from Rockville. Sole teacher, Onekaka, 12 applicants: Gordon Mitchell, Arapito. Sole teacher, Tiroroa: Chas. Harrow. Sole teacher, Charleston, 45 applicants: Chas. Minifie, Waimataitai. Sole teacher, Maggie Creek: Henri Gapper.
