WEST COAST ROADS.

[to the editor.] Sir,—So far as scenery is concerned, I willingly admti that the West Coast is 100 per cent, attractive, but there is one serious drawback to the popularity of the district with tourists —unless they use aeroplanes —and that drawback is the really awful condition of most of the roads. For instance, the road from Greymouth to, say, Kumara. This is, I believe, a main highway, but its present state would not be a credit to even a backblocks track. It is one long-drawn-out agony for motor drivers, the surface of the road being an almost-con-stant series of corrugations and potholes. Driving over a corrugatediron roof would be child’s play compared to this “main highway.” Motorists pay heavily enough for the privilege of using the roads, and get little in return. It is time they had a fair deal, and the authorities got busy and put the road in order. It will probably be said that the road as far- as Paroa is undergoing preparatory work for tar-sealing, but the other portions of the road are not, and should receive immediate attention, particularly as the tourist season is about to begin. To drive over the GreymouthKumara road at present is enough to break the heart of any driver—to say nothing of the back of his car. —I am, etc., C.A.A.
