GERMS IN MILK

ELDERLY MAN’S DEATH. [PER press association.] CHRISTCHURCH, November 15. The death of an elderly man caused by undulant fever was reported by the Inspector to the Waimairi County Council, at the meeting last evening. The infection was caught by drinking milk from a cow infected with germs after having suffered from contagious abortion. The Inspector said it was the only case he had known in Waimairi, although he had known four such cases in the North Island. It was not until recently specified as undulant fever. In all the cases, the persons affected were great milk drinkers, or were continually handling cattle or milk. The man who had died had drunk large quantities from a particular cow. A member of the Council said that he had known of the disease for some time. It had been commonly treated as influenza. The Inspector said the disease was not the .result of dirty dairies, but of a germ in a few cows. The Chairman: All milk should be boiled before drinking. A member: And then it is no good. •The report was received.
