REEFTON, October 23

Mr and Mrs Arthur Wells, of Murchison, visited Reefton during the week-end.

Mr Constable, of the Reefton Post and Telegraph staff, spent the weekend in Christchurch.

The funeral of the late Charles Cooper took place on Sunday afternoon at the Suburban Cemetery. Workmates of deceased from the Big River mine acted as pall-bearers, and representatives of the Miners’ Union also attended, as did the secretary of the Big River Company. Mr and Mrs A. P. Watson spent the week-end in Christchurch.

The official opening of the Reefton Tennis Club was set down to have Peen held. On Saturday, but owing to showery weather the function was postponed. On Monday a young people’s rally was conducted at Gannons, on the Boatman’s Track by members and adherents of Knox Presbyterian Church, Reefton. Bible classes, young men’s and. young women's, gathered early in the morning al. the picnic place, and carloads from Inangahua Junction Landing, Hukarere, Ikamatua and Totara Flat attended. A service was held at 11 a.m., at which an address was delivered by Rev. A. Richards, M.A., of Totara Flat. The mid-day meal was enjoyed, and the afternoon was spent in games, rambling, and sports.

On Sunday evening, at the conclusion of the evening service, the choir members and young people of Wesley Church gathered and made a presentation to Mr W. Baird, who has been a keen churchman for years, and who is leaving the district. A gift of a set of military brushes was. handed to Mr Baird, and several speakers referred to the loss which (he church was sustaining in Mr Baird’s departure. Mr Baird suitably replied. The official opening of the Reefton Bowling Club’s green was held on Monday afternoon in glorious weather Many visitors were present, and after the rolling down of “kitty,” a number of rinks were played. Afternoon tea was served, and play continued until late in the afternoon.

Mr Robert Patterson, sen., of Westport, spent the week-end in Reefton, visiting his mother, Mrs Patterson, Walsh Street.

The opening of the Blackspoint Tennis Club’s courts was‘held on Monday afternoon. There was a splendid attendance. Mr W. Bolitho declared the season opened, and an enjoyable series of games were played. The- ladies served afternoon tea.
