ENTERTAINMENTS

OPERA HOUSE—TO-NIGHT. Bill Boyd adds two fights to his record of more than 100, in “Emergency Call,” to be shown to-night, Saturday’s matinee and evening. Because he specialised in two-fisted roles, Boyd has seldom appeared without a fight. He has had to meet such tactics as eye-gouging, choking, kicking, and even biting. In “Emergency Call” Boyd experiences his toughest battle. It is staged on a moving freight elevator where a fall would have meant disaster. Boyd, William Gargan, Wynne Gibson, Betty Furness, and George E. Stone, appear in the hazardous exploits of an ambulance surgeon and driver when they unearth graft.

A coloured cartoon, “Santa’s Workshop,” and a Charlie Chaplin comedy, “The Cure,” add to a wonderful weekend programme. At Wallsend to-night, “This is the Life” will be shown, and at Blackball “The Song You Gave Me,” a screen classic, will be shown to-night and Saturday. SCHAEF’S HALL. The Old Time Dance to be held in Schaef’s Popular Hall to-morrow night will be run by the Greymouth Fire Brigade. The committee ensure everyone an excellent night’s entertainment as they have engaged Schaef’s Orchestra, and many dancers think that there is no better’ floor on the Coast than Schaef’s Hall.

FIRE ALARM DANCE.

The latest craze from New York will be introduced as the big hit of the year on the West Coast, when the Grey Surf Club and Municipal Band will hold a Fire Alarm dance, at the Blaketown Hall, on Monday, October 29. Particulars will be advertised later.

COMPETITIONS SOCIETY. The music, elocution and dancing teachers of Greymouth are tendering the West Coast Competitions Society a grand recital in the Town Hall on Friday, 19th inst., when a brilliant variety programme will be submitted. The programme will embrace instrumental numbers by the pupils of the Convent of Mercy, and of Misses Maida Topliss, and Mildred Coburn; dancing numbers by the pupils of Misses Dorothy Thwaites, Mavis Burgoyne, and Vivienne Knowles; elocutionary numbers by the pupils of I Misses Nellie McDonnell, Mona Hannan, and Adria Bush; vocal and concerted numbers by the pupils of Mr Harold Prescott, and choirs under the baton of Mr Jas. Paterson. Further details will be published later. The proceeds of the concert will be applied to the extinction of the deficit resulting from the Society’s last Festival. Later on it is intended to arrange a further function, the proceeds of which will be devoted to the purchase of a piano, as owing to the difficulty in securing a suitable instrument for the festivals and other of the Society’s functions, the Executive feels that the time has arrived when it is essential that it possess an instrument of its own. EXCURSION TO TIMARU Enquiries from the various depots indicate that the public are realising the advantage of early booking to secure comfortable seating accommodation on the Karoro Sports Club’s train to Christchurch and Timaru and

their enterprise in including Timaru as a rendezvous is appreciated.. Yesterday a meeting of citizens in Timaru decided to take steps to boost their town and anyone travelling, with this excursion who has not previously visited this attractive seaside resort will realise they have the goods to boost.
