NEW MATERNITY-HOSPITAL
THE FINANCIAL ASPECT. fPKtt PRESS ASSOCIATION.! WELLINGTON, May It. The Health Minister, Mr Young, today explained the position in regard to the new Obstetrical Hospital at Dunedin. He said it was proposed Io replace two obstetrical hospitals that now were functioning there, and amended financial proposals were at present receiving consideration, 'rhe Dunedin Savings Bank offer had nothing to do with the Government. It was made to the Hospital Board. The attitude of Hie Government was made plain in November, when a deputation at Dunedin was informed that the Public Works Department had gone carefully into the question of reconditioning the St. Helen's Hospital, which could be done for tin estimated cost oD£8.15(). 'lhe Board’s proposal was to erect a building estimated to cost .£23.370, which, with the expenses of the site and equipment, would make in round figures .£30,000. It was proposed that the Government, make a grant of .£lO,OOO. while the Government. would also have to subsidise the remaining £20.000 by £lO,OOO. The Board had to choose between this and the St. Helen’s proposals.
