IBY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] “5.0.5.” MYSTERY. SYDNEY, May 11. A mysterious “5.0.5.” radio was picked up by coastal shipping last night. The signal was heard by the operator of the freighter “Sirsa” in Bass Strait about 8 p.m. Simultaneously, an urgent request was received from a powerful New Zealand station, asking that all Australian shipping immediately clear the air for 15 minutes, as that station had also heard an “5.0.5.” from somewhere in the Tasman Sea. Fifteen minutes later, the same New Zealand station told the ship to carry on, as that station would continue to listen throughout the night.
