FATAL FEAST
FILIPINOS EAT FUNGUS.
SAN FRANCISCO, March 6.
Of 22 Filipinos who ate poisoned fungus, 13 are dead, and so sure are doctors that the other nine will die that the. funerals of the former have been delayed.
The community feast of the 22 Filipino lettuce-pickers took place at San Luis Obispo (California), and their two American employers were also invited. It resulted in the agonised deaths of 13. The party partook of a delectable dish of mushrooms which were really toadstools of a highly poisonous variety.
The funerals of the first 13 have been delayed so that a mass funeral for all may be held at the one time. Autopsies show that acute yellow atrophy of the liver was ,the direct cause of death. Heavy rains had brought up large beds •of fungus in the hills surrounding the ranch. The Americans' did not partake of the meal.
