’QUAKE REGULATIONS
REVOCATION OPPOSED. [PEB PBEBB ASSOCIATION.] HASTINGS, February 9. Disapproval of the intended revocation by the Government of the building regulations issued by proclamation in respect to Hastings, Napier and Wairoa, and imposed after the earthquake in 1931, was expressed last evening by the Mayor of Hastings, Mr G. A. Maddison, at a meeting of the Borough Council. Mr Maddison said that in his opinion the Government should not only keep the regulations in force in the boroughs mentioned, but should apply them to the whole of New Zealand. It was reasonable to fear that the country might some day suffer just as great an earthquake as Hawke’s Bay had experienced. The lessons of 1931 should not be forgotten. For the protection of the people, the regulations should be made compulsory throughout the whole of New Zealand.
