£20 CIVIC BEETROOT

GROWN ON MANSION HOUSE. Lord Wakefield paid £2O recently for a beetroot . , It was a very special beetroot, grown by Miss Doreen Greenaway, daughter of the Lord Mayor, on the roof of the Mansion House, and it was sold by auction at the Scala. Theatre in aid of the London District of the League of Mercy. The Princess Royal and the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress, Sir Percy and Lady Greenaway, were present at the performance by the Stock Exchange Dramatic and Operatic Society of “The Nelson Touch,” by Neil Grant, the proceeds of which realised over £lOOO for the League. The beetroot was one of several lots offered for sale in the second interval by Mr. Donald Calthro-p, who- delighted the audience with his pleasant patter in the guise of a tramp. Bidding was brisk in the upper circle, but Lord Wakefield finally secured the prize. It weighed lOozs., so that the beetroot cost £2 an ounce.
