PURCELL v. O'BRIEN

(Recd. December 19, 8 a.m.) SYDNEY, December 18. At the Sydney Stadium in a 12 rounds bout, Jimmy Purcell gained a technical knockout decision in the ninth round over Ray O’Brien. AL BROWN MISSING. LONDON, December 18. An extraordinary position has arisen over a fight due to-morrow, in London, between ex-seaman Watson, British featherweight champion, and Al Brown, of Cuba, the world bantamweight champion. The latter has been guaranteed £lOOO for the fight, but he apparently has mysteriously been marooned at Algiers.

Tarleton is proceeding homeward from Australia, partly by plane, in order to deputise for Brown, if necessary, but consternation has been caused by the discovery that he has put on too much weight during the journey. Dave Crowley is now expected to fight Watson. WESTPORT ASSOCIATION. At a meeting of the Westport Boxing Association, held last evening, it was decided to abandon the Boxing Night tournament, owing to the difficulties, financial and otherwise, in arranging a professional bout. It was also decided' to write to the Greymouth Association regarding a match With Lister and Ron Richards, of Australia, in the New Year, if the latter is available.
