SYDNEY, November 13.

The “Telegraph” says that Australia’s greatest all-round athlete, Jack Metcalfe, will not compete at the national track and field championships at Adelaide in January. This decision has shocked the State and National athletic officials. Another announcement, made by Metcalfe, which will cause official ccncern, is that he has accepted an invitation to tour New Zealand, with Horsfall, of Victpria, and Barwick, of Tasmania. The New South Wales Amateur Athletic Association has not yet been officially informed of the invitation. CYCLING. The following are the handicaps for the Grey-United Cycling Club’s meeting at Victoria Park on Wednesday evening:—

The Greymouth-United Cycling Club held their first social outing of the season, yesterday, when about twentyfour members, including six ladies, took part in a run to the Marsden caves. The party left town at 10.30 a.m., and returned about 5 o’clock, after an enjoyable day. •

On Wednesday, at Victoria Park, there will be two handicap races, a girls’ race and a boys’ race, which, together with the record attempts should provide an interesting programme. On Friday, it is proposed to run a 9 mile road race to Paroa and back, .starting from the Suburban Hotel at 6.45 p.m. Two interesting events will be included in the programme to be conducted by the Greymouth United Cycling Club, at Victoria Park, on Wednesday evening. H. Turtill will put up his best time for a live-miles motor-paced clay track record. There is no official record for such a track, in New Zealand, but on an asphalt track, in Australia, R. Opperman holds the record, his speed approximating 42 miles per hour. An attempt on the one-hour motor-paced record will be made on Wednesday evening by Dave Clark.
