MR BALDWIN’S APPEAL.

In a message addressed to the Conservative candidate at a by-election that is proceeding for the Skipton Division of Yorkshire, Mr Stanley Baldwin, reiterates the Government’s deep interest, in the cause of disarmament.
He says: “The whole of (he country, irrespective of party, is solidly united in favour of peace and disarmament by international agreement, the British Government, has been striving to achieve it, and there never was a time when it. was more necessary for the people to give the Government (heir support on this issue.”
U.S.A. AND JAPAN
MOSCOW, October 29.
It is announced here, ostensibly from Washington, that America has formally declined a Japanese offer for an Americo-.Tapanese non-aggres-sion pact.
LABOUR M.P’S OPINION.
AUCKLAND, October 29
“I do not think conflict with Japan is inevitable,” said Mr. Walter Nash, M.P., who returned by the Aorangi, after attending the Institute of Pacific Relations and other conferences in Canada.
Ho said that while at the moment the problem between Japan, China, and the western world seemed insoluble, ho thought, there was a way <nit. if must be solved by rational negotiation between the countries concerned. If tho right procedure were followed, and the military spirit not allowed to predominate, he was of opinion that Japan would once more link up with the League of Nations.
Court, this morning, for negligently driving a motor car. Mr. Justice Ostler said that such cases were getting far too common.
MANSLAUGHTER PENALTY.
MELBOURNE, October 31.
A sentence of live years’ imprisonment. with hard labour, was imposed on Leo Starr, for the manslaughter of his aunt, Katherine Starr. Justice Wasley, passing sentence, said that he deliberately withheld his verdict for a week, so he would not be unduly influenced by the revolting circumstances of the case.
