OPPOSITION CAMPAIGN.
[by CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYBIGHT.]
DUBLIN, September 3.
Mr Cosgrave and Mr MacDermott (Centre Party Leader) are expected to make important announcements on September 8, for a whirlwind campaign following on rank and file ratifications of the union of the Opposition Party. General O’Duffy is to be offered the Presidency of the new United Party, instead of Mr Cosgrave in order to leave him free for outside campaigning while Mr Cosgrave is occupied in the Dail.
“BLUE SHIRTS” DISSOLVED.
LONDON, September 4.-.
“The Daily Herald’s” special correspondent says: The Blue Shirts are to make their peace with the authorities by joining a constitutional political organisation. On this compromise the new United Irish Party has been formed. The Blue Shirts, as an emblem of Fascism are thus disappearing. This compromise has largely been due to pressure which Mr MacDermott, the Leader of the Farmers’ Party, brought to bear on General O’Duffy. A youth movement, associated with the old National Guard, will continue, but all of the members will be part of a political v organisation. < CIVIL WAR AVERTED. (Recd. September 5; 9 a.m.) LONDON, September 4. The “Guardian’s” Dublin correspondent says: Overmuch importance should not be. attached to the United Opposition, which will only slightly increase its effectiveness: in the Dail, votes in the electorates,.’ and merely ' save De Valera’s old opponents from despair. The chief gain, is that it averts civil war. ' ■ ■ 1
