Parkhill stated that the Federal surplus was about £3,750,000, and that amount would have been distributed if Parliament had been sitting, and the budget delivered. When the budget was delivered. it would be in the nature of reducing taxation to the least amount of the surplus stated. NORTHERN TERRITORY. SYDNEY, August 15. An aerial expedition for the exploration of the Northern Territory began to-day, from Mascot Aerodrome. Captain Neale, who was associated with the recent Mackay aerial expedition in Central Australia, is piloting a Percival Gull machine. The party includes Commander Bennett, formerly of the Australian Navy, and Mr. W. G. Hutchins, who has an extensive knowledge of the Northern Territory. Their mission is to acquire first hand knowledge of the prospects of development. BLUE STAR LINE. SYDNEY, August 15. The entry of the Blue Star line into the Australian shipping trade has been postponed for twelve months, unforeseen circumstances having arisen preventing a regular service being begun as soon as. had previously been expected. LATER. The Blue Star line has practically completed arrangements for immediate inauguration of a service between New Zealand and the United Kingdom, and it is understood this circumstance prevents the Company negotiating further with Australian shippers at the present stage. TARIFF REDUCTION. SYDNEY. August 16. The “Herald” says: A new political organisation known as the Consumers’ Tariff Reduction League, will be launched in Sydney during the next few days. Its main object will be to secure tariff reduction and reforms in trade and production restrictions. A specific demand will be made for an immediate reduction of the existing tariff to the level of 1921/30 tariff, and the elimination of protective duties on goods, the manufacture of which in Australia, is uneconomic. The principles of the Ottawa. Agreement will be endorsed. It is intended that unless its aims aro achieved to submit, candidates at the next Federal elections. j
