CUBAN STRIKE ENDED

LAWLESSNESS SUBSIDES

BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.]

VANCOUVER, August 14.

From yesterday at midnight until six this morning 22 Porristas had been killed in Havana streets or on rooftops. Twenty-eight others were captured and turned over to the military. The latter promised the populace and the “A.8.C.” official to kill them as public enemies after quick court martials.

With this accomplished, the passive strike subsided. The streets and shops became crowded with enthusiastic, joyous purchasers and business shook itself into smiling activity. The mob’s final act was to sack a. million dollars worth of ex-President Machado’s property. Then everybody felt better, and it looked as if the violence had ended. The banks resume operations to-mor-row.

WASHINGTON, August 14.

The United States Government tonight, withdrew one of its two destroyers in Havana harbour, thus indicating an improvement in the condition of the Cuban capital.
