LATE MESSAGES

AUCKLAND, August 15. Two Aucklanders, C. Bruce Smith and V. J. Parkinson, won the New Zealand national section for the north v. south pairs in the world contract bridge contest, in which there were 100,000 entries from 46 countries. The contestants on May 1 played a number of hands specially ■prepared by the committee controlling the contest. The successful New Zealand pair in the east and west division are not yet announced.

AUCKLAND, August 15. Some months ago, a deputation of business men, headed by Mayor Hutchinson, submitted a financial plan to Jlr Coates. The plan included the raising of £10,000,000 in New Zealand for rehabilitation purposes. Mr Coates, in a lengthy reply, just received, says in his opinion the plan would not be in the real interests of the Dominion. Without a rise in oversea prices of our products, anything done internally would probably act only in the direction of spreading the buiden without relieving the situation, i A compulsory loan would be a great mistake.

t 0 the 'suggestion that 1J,.j()(),()()0 he used for relief of unem ployment, Mr Coates said that if relic! pay rates were increased, as mmgested. the number of unemployml would increase considerably. The proposed subsidy of .£ to primary producers would cost more than that, and the country could not aitord both the subsidy and the high exchange. New Zealand must continue to grapple with her problems, and adopt measures that would not hamper recovery. The present indications were that the worst, was over.
