BOXING

AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS Before a small attendance at the Town Hall on Saturday night, the Greymouth Boxing Association staged the West Coast Amateur Championships. There was also a novice tournament. The competition was not equal to that of past years, but in several bouts quite clever boxing was witnessed, and in those that lacked science, the public witnessed keen fighting. The new championship holders are Comerford, Westport (fly-weight), W. Hawes, Westport (feather-weight), E. Swift, Greymouth (lightweight), and M. Howson, Greymouth (welter weight). These were the only classes contested in championship events. In the novice class, the first bout was between P. Zambesi (Greymouth) 9.3, and Mclvor (Brunner) 9.7. Zambesi was much the stronger lad, and 'he Avon by a technical knock-out in the third round. There was nothing scientific in the bout, but both are promising lads. In the bantam class. A. Gillanders (Kokatahi) 8., defeated D. James (Greymouth) 8.4, by a technical knockout in the second round. Gillanders did all the attacking, and being very solidly built, and short, he went after James, and fought close in. His rapid blows gave James small chance to retaliate, and a right hook to the jaw floored James, after which the referee declared Gillanders the winner. C. Bell (Greymouth) 9.7, defeated M. Swift (Greymouth) 9.0, in the novice lightweight class. It was an exciting contest, and in the early stages Swift appeared as the likely winner, for his ringcraft gave him an advantage of the slow-moving Bell. Then in the final round, Bell went after Swift, and both lads gave and received heavy punishment, to face and body. They tired, after putting all their energy into their blows and providing the best fight of the night. It was a close match, but Bell deserved his victory.

N. Rose (Greymouth) 13.7, defeated H. Dowling (Kaiata) 11.8 in the novice heavyweight. This was a quiet contest, but Rose was much the stronger, and won easily, the referee stopping the fight in the third round, when Rose knocked his opponent down with a left swing to the jaw. O. Howson (Greymouth) 10.4, defeated Collins (Stillwater) 10.7. Collins proved to be a difficult man to hit, as his crouch and dancing tactics made it difficult for Howson. There was very little boxing in this bout, but Howson secured the decision.

In the lightweight final, Eell defeated Zambesi, after a good contest, in which both lads took severe punishment.

E. Swift (Greymouth) 8.12, defeated J. Atkinson (Hokitika) 9.0, in the featherweight class, for the championship. Swift was much the better lad, and scored freely with both hands. He was too experienced and much too quick for Atkinson, who was floored in the second round,. He was unable to continue and Swift was declared the winner.

A. McPhee (Brunner) 8.12 was defeated by AV. Hawes (Westport) 8.10 in the featherweight division. Hawes was too clever for his opponent. At the end of the first round, McPhee fell to the canvas after being hit in the solar plexus by Hawes, and he was unable to continue. In the final of this division Flawes defeated Swift. It was a lively encounter, but Hawes was superior in his infighting, and this secured him the decision.

In the flyweight division, Comerford (Westport) 7.2, defeated Bouterey (Greymouth) 7.1. Comerford had an advantage in height, and reach, and demonstrated that he knew .something of boxing. He was an easy winner, and Bouterey was unable to get near him. Bouterey stood up well to punishment, but on being knocked down in the third round, Referee O’Neill declared for Comerford, and stopped the bout.

In the semi-final of the middleweight class, M. Howson (Greymouth) 11.2 defeated D. Chisholm (Hokitika) 11.3. Howson was much superior, and in the first round, he floored his opponent, who was unable to continue. Without leaving the ring, Howson met J. Pfahlert (Ikamatua) 10.12, in the final. He won this bout in the first roiand, the referee awarding him the Ixmt after Phaflert was knocked down with a body blow. In the lightweight contest E. Swift, 8.10, defeated J. Cox (Greymouth) 9.7. Swift was much more experienced, and quicker than Cox, who was beaten in the infighting. CANADIAN’S VISIT VANCOUVER, August 12.. Billy Petrie, 21 years of age, a prominent Vancouver lightweight boxer, sails next week for a series of matches in Australia and New Zealand.
