To-day was . a red letter day for Marlborough Sounds, when the opening of the airport at Waitaria, was carried out in the presence of settlers from all over both Sounds by two planes from the Marlborough aero club. The area, which was selected after investigations on the ground by the Club’s officials, is almost exactly halfway between Wellington and Nelson, and Wellington and Blenheim. Visitors were welcomed by representatives of the Farmers’ Union, and entertained at tea. The speeches emphasised the importance of the occasion, bringing a wonderful holiday resort of the Sounds within an hour s run of Wellington. The area is very suitable, and with improvement will compare favourably with most New Zealand flying fields. The official party were SquadronLeader Chandler, Flying Officer E. R. Dix. E. J. Brammall (secretary), and E. E. Lawrence of Portage, who represented the Sounds’ settlers.
