THIRD TEST MATCH

ENGLAND’S POOR START BAKEWELL’S TIMELY CENTURY [BY CABLE —PBESS ASSN.— COPYBIGHT.] LONDON, August 12. The weather was fine and the wicket was in good condition for the test match at the Oval between the West Indies and England. The teams are: — West Indies: Grant (captain), Barrow, Roach, Headley, Dacosta, Sealy, Merry, Achong, Valentine, Martindale and Griffiths; twelfth man, Christiani.

Walters, when only two, was well caught in the slips off a second attempt at the.fifth-ball he got. Hammond (who made seven) had a life off the next ball of the over, Headley just failing in a brilliant attempt at a catch. Wyatt started steadily, but he was well caught at 13, when-lie appeared to be set. The first hour yielded only 34 runs. Bakewell, who scored 107, played with the utmost caution, not attempting to touch many of Martindale’s bumpers. The weather improved after lunch, when the batsmen were able to see the rising balls better. Bakewell’s century took 145 minutes. He hit eight fours.

Ames played a bright innings .of ifty-five minutes, his score including ive boundaries. There were rapid ihanges in the bowling, which never iost its keenness.
