UNEMPLOYMENT

GREYMOUTH RELIEF COMMITTEE. On Monday last, members of the Mayor's Relief of Distress Committee met and dealt with 52 applications lor assistance, and yesterday afternoon, a record number of 73 applications came before the Committee. Each apphcan was given a parcel of varied goods, and it being stand-down week, the usual rations were augmented by one pound' of butter. Pieces of prime meat to the number of 115 were also distributed, and clothing and boot repairs were included in the assistance rendered. Thirty-five pairs of boots and shoes were repaired by the boot department, the value of the work being £9/8/6. Goods were donated by Messrs Haglund Brothers, apples, weetbix, etc.; “The Dainty,” pies and bacon; Shannon and Glen, Riordan, W. Robertson, P. Blanchfield, bread and cakes, Mis Whibley, clothing; Mrs McLeod, High Street, men’s wear; F. Smith, Nelson, case of apples. A donation ot £23 is also acknowledged from West Coast Amusements Ltd. A case causing anxiety to the Committee is that of a middle-aged widow, who has been unable to secure employment. The woman is prepared to do housework, and would accept temporary employment, until the position improves, in return for board ant lodgings. Any person her services, can obtain particulars ot the case, on application to the Mayor, Mr J. W. Greenslade. In the meantime, the Committee has to meet the cost of providing the woman with lodgings. Coal is urgently required for distribution to the unemployed, and any mines that could make a donation, would be doing a service to the Committee, and the workless. Wages earned by two-day men this week amounted to 7/6, three-day men 12/6, and four-day men 22/6.
