HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL. [OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, August 12. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry). Crs. W. Duff, Jas. King, A. C. Armstrong, Dr. Teichelmann. M. McGavin. D. S. Stuart. G. Heinz. Apologies for absence were received from Crs Elcock and Thompson.

The overseer’s report dealing with work carried out during the month was approved. Westland Timber and Box Co., wrote, asking what charge the Council would impose for an extraordinary water supply to the box factory, Gibson’s Quay, for a steam boiler, or alternatively, what flat rate would be charged. —Usual charges to apply, by meter. C. E. Sparkes, sanitary contractor, wrote intimating that plant requires replacement, and asking whether the Council would grant an extension of the term of the present contract for a further period of three years, in view of the heavy cost of replacement. —Granted.

The Westland Branch, Canterbury Automobile Association, wrote pointing out the unsatisfactory condition of Weld Street, and asking that the condition of the street be improved.— Referred to P.W. Committee for attention.

Mrs I. M. Caliari, wrote asking (1) for a domestic water supply to Sections 997 and 998, Weld and Davie Streets, and (2) for authority to install a septic tank on these sections.—Water supply granted and the septic tank to have approval of Inspector. No. 12 District Highways Council, forwarded Highways Estimates for 1933-84, the subsidy for the Borough being £225 on the three for one pound basis.

The N.Z. Refrigerating Co., intimated that the following quantities of meat were delivered into Hokitika during the month of June, 1933: —Nine sheep. The Secretary, Hokitika Harbour Board, forwarded copy of resolution respecting striking of harbour rates for the year ending September 30, 1933, including a rebate of 5 per cent., and a penalty of 10 per cent. The Treasurer reported receipts amounting to £496 10/9, payments £866 9/5; debit balance £1139 2/4. Accounting amounting to £983 19/11 were passed for payment. The Abattoirs manager reported animals examined during the month: 11 cows, 14 heifers. 59 bullocks, 358 sheep, 4 lambs, 5 pigs, 23 calves,' condemned nil. Fees collected £63 16/-, for same period last year £6O 0/6. The Finance Committee recommended that the sanitary contract be renewed till July, 1936, and the same renumeration, the contractor be recommended to place rubber Lyres on the wheels of his vehicle. The Public Works Committee were authorised to prepare a report, by next meeting on the question of constructing a drain along Jollie Street to tap the swamp and therefore relieve Bealey Street etc.
