MAORI UNEMPLOYED
MINISTER OUTLINES WORK.
[PEB PRESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, August 10. The outline of comprehensive contract work plans, which have been launched successfully for tho relief of Maori unemployed, was given by Sir A. T. Ngata, in an interview. Employment of a reproductive nature is being provided for 1300 men. As examples of the work being done, he said at Ruatoki, 120 young men were breaking in 1540 acres of scrub, hilly country, at 15/- pei’ acre. That work would be considered cheap at 35/- per acre. Much work was being done in supplying fencing posts. In one. case, near Lake Kotoiti, it
had been found necessary to construct seven miles of access road to reach totara bush, which was expected to yield 100,000 posts. With the help of the unemployment subsidy, it was expected that the posts would be available from the dump on the Rotorua— Whakatane road at less than £4 a hundred, a reduction of £3 on the present price. Provisional allocations for North Auckland involved a sum of £17,000, which was providing, or would provide, work for 1332 Maoris on individual farms, as well as on group development areas.
