GREY MAIN SCHOOL

SUBSIDY REFUSED. In reply to a deputation from the Grey Main School Committee, which waited on Mr Bitchener, Acting-Min-ister of Education when he was in Greymouth recently asking the Minister if he would reinstate the subsidy of £llB 16/1, which was due to the Committee, and was expended by them on the purchase of library books and improving the playground, Mr J. O’Brien, M.P., has received the following reply from the Minister: — “Dear Sir, —With reference to the representations made to me on the occasion of my recent visit to Greymouth. when you introduced a deputation from the Greymouth School Committee concerning the payment of subsidy, I find on enquiry that the. School Committee raised voluntary contributions of £llB 16/1 for the purpose of improving the playgrounds • and for the purchase of library books, and submitted a claim for subsidy of a similar amount to the Department through the Canterbury Education Board. The Committee, however, did not wait for approval of the subsidy, but proceeded with the proposed improvements. In the meantime, owing to financial stringency, the granting of subsidies was withheld. The action of the committee in proceeding with the work before the necessary approval was obtained is entirely responsible for the position in which it finds itself, and as there are no funds available for

such purposes at the present time, I very much regret there is no way of assisting the committee out of the difficulty.—Yours faithfully, John Bitchener.” NEW SCHOOL-BOOKS CONTRACT. [SPECIAL.
