WAITAKI JUBILEE.

The speakers included Admiral Halsey, Mr Leopold Amery, Sir Edward Grigg and Sir Thomas Wilford. The Master of Sempill read messages of congratulations and good wishes from the Prince of Wales, recalling his visit to the school in 1920, and from the Duke of York, mentioning his visit in 1927. BRITISH MOTOR CARS. RUGBY, May 11. A large increase in exports of British motor cars is shown by the Board of Trade returns. During the first four months of this year cars valued at £3,337,038 were sold overseas, as against £2,240,358 worth in the corresponding period of last year. FRANCO-CANADIAN TARIFFS. OTTAWA, May 12. Two treaties between Canada and France -were signed in the office of Mr Bennett, to-day, providing for a reduction in tariff barriers between the two countries. Possible benefits under the reductions will principally affect the wheat "and canned salmon tariffs, so far as Canada is concerned. FRENCH BUDGET .PARIS, May 12. Senator Marcel Regnier, who is an acknowledged authority on national finance, declares that the French budget is in a state of ever-increasing deficit. National revenue is steadily falling, and public funds are becoming exhausted. A suspension of payments will be inevitable unless the state of affairs is quickly adjusted. GANDHI’S WEIGHT CALCUTTA, May 12. Gandhi’s condition at midnight was reported to be weak, but satisfactory. He has lost eight pounds in weight since the beginning of his fast. He now weighs 941 b.
