Last evening, the solemn office of Tenebrae was chanted by the clergy and religious of the Parish, there being a large congregation. The general impression created by the Church during the office of Tenebrae is one of deep mourning, the service being the funeral office of the Lord. The word “Tenebrae” means, darkness, and the name has been given to this particular office by reason of the darkness of the hours during which it is chanted, and also in memory of the darkness which overshadowed the earth on the occasion,of the Crucifixion. This darkness is emphasised by the gradual extinction during the service of all the lights in the church, which is finally left in complete, darkness, at which stage the service is concluded with the chanting of the “Miserere.”

Mass was celebrated at 7.45 a.m. this morning (Holy Thursday) in commemoration of the institution of the Holy Eucharist, and at its conclusion the Sacred Host was carried in the procession to the Altar of Repose, where a continuous adoration will be kept up until Mass to-morrow morning. The men of the parish will attend during the night hours to watch. The celebrant of the Mass was Very Rev. Father Long, and also in the Sanctuary were: Rev. Fathers O’Meeghan (Deacon), Healy (SubDeacon), and Holohan (Master of Ceremonies). A Mass in Unison (unaccompanied) was sung by the Choir and there was a large congregation. The traditional services will be continued during the remainder of the week.
