FIRE AT GRANITY

PICTURE THEATRE DESTROYED.

As the result of a fire which occurred early on Sunday morning, at ■ Granity, the picture theatre was completely destroyed, with its contents, including two talkie machines and apparatus, and some of the instruments and effects of the Granity Silver Band. The hall was owned by the Watson Estate, and was leased to the Band. The damage is estimated at approximately £5OOO. The Band’s loss is estimated at £l5OO, and this is covered by insurance to the extent of only £4OO. The building was insured, and is to be replaced' by another structure, at an early date. Volunteer fire-fighters, with one lead of hose from the Westport Coal Company’s main, were instrumental in saving the Granity Hotel, Wilson’s shop, and McDonald’s store from destruction. The north side of the hotel was charred, and the flames secured a hold in the rafters, but were prevented from spreading. Wilson’s shop was considerably damaged at the rear. The dropping of the wind, and' commencement of rain, helped the firefighters. The talkie film, “The Broken - Lullaby,” was lost in the fire.
