ALLEGATIONS OF FRAUD

WELLINGTON, March 10

Allegations that in three years relief and .rations to the value of £498 odd had been obtained from the Wellington Hospital Board by means of false representations were made at the Magistrate’s Court to-day when charges against two of four members of a family alleged to lie concerned were proceeded with. ’Mona Bartlett was charged with being a rogue and a vagabond in that she had obtained rent, coal, boots, and shoes by falsely representing that none of her family was working. Keith Bartlett was charged with being a rogue and vagabond in respect of two alleged offences of obtaining rations valued at £2/11/- by falsely representing that he was the only member of the family working. Alfred James Bartlett and Maud Bartlett, the father and mother respectively did not appear, and a medi cal certificate that, they were unable vo appear was produced. Counsel for the. Board indicated (hat the alleged offences took place from September 19:29 to October J 932, and it would be shown, hi: said, that the lowest weekly income of the family during the period was £6/11/-, and highest £ll/16/6, combining wages! and grants by the Board, and in ad-1 dition grants which were made from | other sources.

At the Union Clothing retail premises at the corner of Ghuznee Street and Cuba Street, six windows were broken this evening, about ten o’clock, by a. man who was arrested. He gave as the reason for the action that he needed food and wished to be taken in charge. The man was elderly. He said he was unemployed. Onlookers say the man used a piece of. piping, and smashed six windows in rapid succession. Then he waited for the police to arrive. The damage is £l6u.
