HUSBAND CHARGED

BRISBANE, February 24

John Elgar Thomas Cottell, 37, fuel merchant, appeared in the Police Court yesterday charged with the wilful murder of his wife, Gertie Cottell, at Toowong, on January 25. Sergeant W. J. Henry said that when he arrived at defendant’s house, defendant was being held by two men and was excited and restless. Defendant declared that his wife had beep “cold” to him. for three years, and that, morning he took a. revolver and threatened to shoot himself. She told him he was “not game. He said “1 will shoot you,” and she replied: “Shoot me.”

“I pointed the revolver at her,” he told witness. ‘‘She grabbed the barrel and pulled it towards herself. The revolver went off and shot her. Although I pointed the revolver at her, I would not have shot her. I loved her too much.” Defendant was further remanded.
