I ANOTHER GAIN FOR AUCKLAND

SYDNEY, October 14.
The first prize in the eighty-second New South Wales State Lottery, which was drawn to-day, went to Ticket No. 37,673. It is held in Auckland, but the winner's name and address are at present unprocurable. THE LUCKY SYNDICATE [SPECIAL TO “STAR.”] AUCKLAND, October 15. The first prize of £5,000, in the Eighty-second New South Wales State lottery, was won by a syndicate of six Ponsonby residents, Mr. and Mrs. C. Malyon, Messrs D. and H. Adye, aand Messrs W. T. Webb and J. Murphy.
CONDEMNED BY CHURCHES.
SYDNEY, October 5.
Speeches strongly condemnatory, of the State Lottery and of gambling generally were delivered at the monthly meeting of the Council of Churches yesterday. Rev. W. H. Jones declared that the State Lottery was one of the most serious evils that the churches were up St. Rev. S. H. Cox considered it to be a worse evil than six months ago, and said men were known to have robbed their families of their Sunday dinners in 'order to get money to put into the lottery.
Mr T. E. Rofe said children were saving pennies, for lottery tickets, that they usually spent at tuckshops. Pastor Davis said an 8-year-old scholar in his Scripture class had gleefully informed him that day that he won 3/- on a certain horse on Saturday. A motion was carried, congratulating Archbishop D. J. Davies, the president of the council, upon his outspoken utterances in regard to the lottery, and what were pronounced to be his effective replies to the Minister for Health (Mr Weaver). A motion was carried, that the public questions committee be instructed to try' to arrange for a deputation to the Premier, and also report back on the advisability of holding a public demonstration of protest.
