Mrs J. Lowe, daughter of Mr and Mrs J. Harwell, who underwent a serious operation at Lewisham Hospital, is making satisfactory progress.

Lieutenant Hatton, of the Grej - mouth Corps of the Salvation Army, has been promoted to Captain, and will leave next Saturday, on transfer to Sydenham. . .

The death occurred yesterday, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs A. Coumbe, Greymouth, of Mr Edward Garland, at the age of 88 years. The deceased, who was a native of Melbourne, arrived on the West Coast sixty-seven years ago, and worked on the goldfields of the district. He resided for many years at Maori Creek, where, for sixteen years, he was chairman of the School Committee, and acted as correspondent and agent there for the “Star” for a number of years. The late Mr Garland, who had been ailing for the past two months, was predeceased by his wife eleven years ago. He is survived by one son, Henry, (of Panama), who recently retired from a position as Health Inspector, and three daughters, Mesdames A. Coumbe (Greymouth), A. E. Hackell (Hokitika), anil D. Galpin (Levin). One son, Allan,- was killed in the Great War, while another, Edward, lost his life as the result of a mine accident in Australia.
