HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

HOKITIKA, August 13

The Hokitika Borough Couricil met last evening. Present: The May'or (Mr Perry), Crs D. J. Evans, A. C. Armstrong, A. R. Elcock, T. W. Duff, E. W. Heenan, Dr. Teichelmann, Jas. King, D. P. Stuart. An apology was received for the absence of Cr Heinz. Rev. H. J. W. Knights wrote thanking the Council for electing him as a member of the Westland Hospital Board.

The Commissioner of Transport, Wellington, wrote intimating that the Minister of Transport has now approved, as a multi-axled heavy motoi' vehicle, any vehicles specially designed or adapted so that the weight of the vehicle and its load is carried on three axles with their respective road wheels and having not less than two wheels to each axle, and also intimating that representations \ have been made to the Government that heavy motor vehicles, owned' by farmers and used solely for the transport of the individual farmers produce and supplies, be exempted from the payment of heavy traffic fees and giv” ing reasons for the exemption asked for.

The District Highways Council, Greymouth, wrote drawing attention to the fact that Regulation 8 (1) of the Heavy Motor Vehicle Regulations 1932, prohibiting the use of on any road, of a traction engine or a metaltyred motor 'vehicle unless the consent thereof in writing, is first obtained by the controlling authority. The term heavy motor vehicle includes a tractor or a steam engine. Recently in the No. 3 District, a tractor driver was prosecuted and convicted under these regulations, the circumstances being that he drove a metaltyred motor along a highway. Mr H. O. Fairlie, Rolleston Street, and eight other petitioners asked that a street light be placed at the corner of Rolleston and Park Streets. —Referred to P.W. Committee to report. Thomas Cagney wrote pointing out the unsanitary condition of the Brittan Street drain on the east side between Stafford Street and Hampden Street, and asking that the Council have the matter attended to, and if possible piped. W. H. Stopforth, Revell Street, applied to break asphalt footpath -for purpose of inserting pipe to take away storm water. (Already approved).—• Applicant to restore footpath to its former position. Mr Stopforth also asked for permission to ei’ect suspension verandah from his new shop in Revell Street. — Approved.

Miss M. B. Andrewes applied for a few days’ special leave for health reasons.—Granted.

I. Staines wrote offering to renew the contract for removal of offal from Abattoirs.

I. O. Perry wrote asking permission to erect a small building for the Plunket Society, as a rest room.—Left with the Town Clerk and Mayor ro report.

The Borough Treasurer reported receipts £937/3/7, expenditure £976 4/9,_ debit £904/4/7. Accounts aggregating £ll2O/13/10 were presented and passed for payment. The foreman reported on work carried out during the month. The foreman was authorised to

confer with Mr J. N. Robinson (of Kanieri Electric) for the lowering of the Borough intake pipe at ’Lake Kanieri.

The Abattoirs manager reported. Animals slaughtered during July: ■ 4 cows, 18 heifers, 57 bullocks,, 286 sheep, 14 lambs, 2 pigs, 35 calves; condemned 1 bullock. Fees received £6O/0/6.
