Transport and the Depression A Question of Cause and Effect A there may be differences of opinion /% as to the causes of the depression, there should be general agreement about one of the present troubles—the over-supply of transport facilities—an ekeess which costs the country some millions sterling a ydar. While the Railways, well-equipped and efficiently cirganisted for satisfactory economical transport, have the latent capacity for a large increase of service, the Dominion is heavily burdened with competitive transport. It is dear that the Dominion’s full recovery from the present set-back necessitates elimination of waste in transport. The Railways can help New Zealand to regain prosperity.
