EXPORT OF GOLD

ALLEGED DUTY EVASION.

[BY CABLE —PBESS ASSN. —COPYBIGHT.]

SYDNEY, August 11.

Percy Wince, aged 36, a ship’s steward, was before the City Court to-day, on a provisional warrant from New Zealand, charged with being concerned in the fraudulent evasion or attempted evasion, of the duty on the export of 207 sovereigns and 219 halfsovereigns from New Zealand, as first reported on July 29.

Detective Baker said that when he arrested Wince, after the arrival of the “Niagara,” in July, the latter said he had no idea of the contents of the parcels that were in his possession. They were given to him by a man named George Washington, in a Wellington hotel, to deliver to persons here, who were to meet him in his cabin.

Detective-Sergeant Tricklebank, of Wellington, asked the Court to order Wince’s return to New Zealand in his 1 custody, and the Magistrate complied with the request.
